Lessons from Kung Fu Panda

I took my children over the weekend to see the new animation starring the voice talents of Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman, Kung Fu Panda. I was pleasantly surprised on how funny it was. I think I heard the parents laugh out loud more than the children!

There were quite a few lessons to be learned from the film, but these two lines continued to ring in me, even days after seeing the movie. This is as close as I can remember. The lines were told to master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) by his own mentor when he was all up in arms about something:

“Your mind is like water. When it’s agitated you can barely see clearly (the Master moves his hands in the water to demonstrate the ripple effect). But once you become quiet and are in peace, then everything becomes clear…”

Once Shifu was able to calm himself down and breathe, the answer he was looking for was reflecting in the water…

This is a good lesson to remember: when we are agitated we can’t see clearly the answers to the problems we are encountering. But if we would just be still and know that He is God, the Holy Spirit will come in the still small voice of His and show you clearly the answers you seek. The answers will always reflect the truth and beauty of the Word of God.

When your first reaction is to do something, choose to engage in patience. Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. And that strength will help you carry out the instructions you receive in that moment of peace from the One Who loves you and wants the best for you.
